Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes near Nanao, Ishikawa, Japan

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Nanao, Ishikawa, Japan, was reported only 19 minutes ago by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 13.5 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Saturday 14 August 2021 at 10:38 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nanao (pop. 45,300) located 56 km from the epicenter, Nyūzen (pop. 27,600) 68 km away, Kurobe-shi (pop. 42,600) 70 km away, Himimachi (pop. 54,500) 75 km away, Takaoka (pop. 170,100) 86 km away, Toyama (pop. 325,500) 90 km away, and Jōetsu (pop. 204,100) 98 km away.
